A PHEV is exactly what its name suggests: it's a hybrid car with a battery pack that can be plugged in to charge it up. Like conventional hybrid models, PHEVs have both a petrol or diesel combustion engine and an electric motor.

There are a number of engines on offer, and the one we're talking about here is the diesel plug-in hybrid, badged E300de. It's the pick of the range, with a powerful 306hp 2.0-litre diesel and battery pack capable of close to 30 miles.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are a combination of gasoline and electric vehicles, so they have a battery, an electric motor, a gasoline tank, and an internal combustion engine. PHEVs use both gasoline and electricity as fuel sources.

Hybrids run primarily on gas. As a result, refueling is the same as conventional vehicles, although generally required less often due to improved fuel economy from the electric motor.

How does a diesel plug-in hybrid work? ›

Tim Grewe, G.M.'s director of electrification, said that as electric vehicles improved and charging infrastructure expanded, plug-in hybrids would become obsolete. “E.V.s are just better,” Mr. Grewe said. “The battery tech has gotten to the point that you don't need the range-extending engine.”

Poorer fuel efficiency and handling

Hybrids and PHEVs are packing two drivetrains into the one car, which means more weight, which can negatively affect fuel efficiency and handling, as well as the aforementioned need to compromise by downsizing both the battery and ICE.

As for fuel economy, you can expect to see around 44mpg, which is better than the non-hybrid diesel's 37.7mpg.

Putting diesel in a petrol car is less serious than putting petrol in a diesel car. After starting your engine, the diesel will coat spark plugs and the fuel system, which often leads to misfiring. Your engine may give off smoke, cut out, or fail to start at all. You should drain the fuel system as soon as possible.

Cut down on systems like air-con and heaters to use less power. Don't sit in neutral gear in start/stop traffic – electricity will not be generated and the hybrid battery will discharge power. Accelerate gently and stick to the speed limit to get the most out of your electric drive mode.

Are plug-in or self-charging hybrids better? On paper, plug-in hybrids are more efficient than a self-charging hybrid, the bigger battery means a PHEV can cover more miles in 100% electric mode. However, this isn't a disadvantage if you're primarily using the car for city driving.
